 St. Louis Blues

“St. Louis Blues” is the first track from the great album, New Bottle Old Wine, Gil did in 1958 for World Pacific to feature Cannonball Adderley. It opens with that short, but amazing statement from Cannonball, and sets the attitude for the whole album. I am really excited to be able to offer this classic chart, taken directly from Gil’s original manuscript, for the first time. This is a great feature for a guest artist or a standout saxophonist in the band.

As with all of Gil’s music, close attention needs to be paid to the instrumentation, as it rarely resembles a standard big band. The instrumentation for “St. Louis Blues” is as follows:

  • 2 Reeds:

    • Reed 1:  Alto Sax

    • Reed 2:  Clarinet, C Flute, Bass Clarinet

  • 1 French Horn

  • 3 Trumpets

  • 3 Trombones (2 tenor, 1 bass)

  • 1 Tuba

  • 4 Rhythm (Gtr./Pno./Bass/Dms.)

Featured Soloist: Alto Sax
