“Waltz/Variation on the Misery/So Long” is a medley of three original compositions of Gil’s, composed over a wide span of his career. Individually, these tunes were performed and recorded many times by Gil’s band throughout his life, but this is the first time this particular medley has appeared together, for this large instrumentation.

Gil wrote this chart for a concert in Berlin in 1971 with a band that has been coined his “Berlin Dream Band” consisting of mostly German musicians with guests that included Steve Lacy and Leo Wright. The only time this music was performed was this particular concert in November 1971, until the Gil Evans Project recorded it in celebration of Gil’s 100th birthday on our album,CENTENNIAL: Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans. I’m thrilled to be able to offer a study score of this monumental work for everyone to study some of Gil’s later writing, as well as how he handled writing for a band of this size. The instrumentation includes: 10 woodwinds, 9 brass, Piano/Bass/Drums, and 2 percussionists.
