La Nevada Blues (Kendor Music Version)

TAKE NOTE: This is NOT the version Gil did on Out of the Cool! In 1959, Gil released the Great Jazz Standards album on World Pacific Records, which included an original tune called “La Nevada (Theme).” Around the same time, he was asked to write two charts for Kendor Music to be published and sold through their publish company. The charts were supposed to be for a more traditional big band instrumentation and playable by younger bands. One of the charts he did was this one, which he titled “La Nevada Blues.” I had always thought these were someone else’s transcriptions/orchestrations, but they are definitely Gil’s. This chart has been out of print for a long time, and we are happy to publish it again here.

This is a PERFECT chart for band directors that want to perform Gil’s music, but don’t want to deal with all of the “extra” instruments and myriad of woodwind doubles. Instrumentation:

  • 5 Reeds:

    • Reed 1:  Alto Sax

    • Reed 2:  Alto Sax

    • Reed 3:  Tenor Sax

    • Reed 4:  Tenor Sax

    • Reed 5:  Baritone Sax

  • 2 French Horns (Opt.)

  • 4 Trumpets (4th Tpt Opt.)

  • 4 Trombones (4th Tbn Opt.) and 1 Tuba (Opt.)

  • 4 Rhythm (Gtr./Pno./Bass/Dms.)
