The Maids of Cadiz (Thornhill Version)

TAKE NOTE: This is NOT the version Gil did for Miles Davis on Miles Ahead! This is a previously unrecorded version that he did seven years BEFORE the version he did for Miles, done for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra. The Thornhill Orchestra never got around to recording it, but thankfully we were able to record this great, historical arrangement on our album, CENTENNIAL: Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans on ArtistShare® for the first time. It’s really fascinating to be able to hear and perform this work, and see where the arrangement that we know for Miles got its start.

As with all of Gil’s music, close attention needs to be paid to the instrumentation, as it rarely resembles a standard big band. The instrumentation for “Maids of Cadiz” is as follows:

  • 5 Reeds:

    • Reed 1:  Alto Sax, Clarinet

    • Reed 2:  Alto Sax, Clarinet

    • Reed 3:  Tenor Sax, Clarinet

    • Reed 4:  Tenor Sax, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet

    • Reed 5:  Baritone Sax

  • 1 French Horn

  • 3 Trumpets

  • 2 Trombones

  • 3 Rhythm (Pno./Bass/Dms.)

Solos include: Reed 2 (Alto Sax), Trumpet 2, Piano
